Earthworm
Today I Saved
first earthworm of my life. And it was a great feeling saving that creature.
Earthworms were out of their holes as it was rainy season, a best time for my
initiation. But later on I felt sad because on the way, therewere many other
earthworms being stepped by vehicles and human. I am an agriculture student, a
reason for why I was keen towards soil and its organisms like earthworm and
many more. On being an agriculturist, I felt bad on the death of earthworm.
Though I had saved one it literally felt great. I catched that one and allowed
it to move on my field. That was the beautiful beginning. I saved next one and
next and next. I knew them so I valued them. But the story was not same for the
people around me. After sometime a huge crowd gathered, all staring at my
unusual deed. They might have thought he
found something valuable and that’s why he is treasuring it with keen interest.
Some people came to me and asked about it. And I replied I am saving an earthworm
as ultimately it’s the one that feeds me. I explained them how earthworms are
important for us and asked them to join me. Most of the people laughed at me
and made fun out of my deed. Some of the so called intellectuals were convinced
with my answer but too busy to support what I was doing. I felt so low and saw myself as a clown on a
crowd. I thought of stopping it too. But after a while I remembered my
determination while I started the work and happiness that the first earthworm
gave me. I consoled myself that, if only Newton had been honored for his
discovery early the world would have been a step ahead by now and in my share,I
was just following the inventions and carried on thinking why they were so
sarcastic. Slowly the crowd disappeared. I carried on my work.
After a while I
felt a hand on my shoulder. When I turned back I saw a man 4 or 5 years older
than me standing with crutches in his hands and staring at earthworm in my hand.
I noticed that he didn’t have his right leg and right hand. And for my pleasant
surprise, he was the only man remaining out of hundreds who gathered. He gently
smiled at me and said ‘Good work brother’. I smiled in return and asked when
thousands of people laughed at me and left why was he standing here with so
difficulty and staring at me? He smiled and replied, ‘I am neither an
agriculturist nor do I know what benefits we have by saving these earthworms.
But from your dedication, all I got to know is whatever you are doing will
influence positive side of peoples’ living. You might be wondering how I lost
my leg and hand. I lost it while doing the same thing you are doing now’. I
asked him if he too was saving earthworms. But he laughed at me and I realized
it was silliest thing I asked him. He replied, ‘ No I am a soldier. There were
many people helpless because of war then. Crawling on the ground seeking for
help and being stepped like these are being stepped. And while saving them
there I was stepped by an armoured vehicle and I lost my helping hand and
unfortunately leg too. He then smiled and went.
I looked towards
him till he disappeared on horizon. And suddenly the earthworm on my hand moved
and made me think. That man whom I witnessed just a little while ago smiled
till the end of his story and I could clearly view his satisfaction from what
he lost. He had not lost his leg and hand but the half of his life but still he
was not mourning for it but instead living. Though he was not anyway related
with these little things he felt core of what I was doing. And me, who had all
the four legs and hands on the place was taken aback just by peoples’ words.
Good works are not bigger every time. Sometimes positivity just needs an
initiation and with time, it becomes viral. I kept the earthworm on the field
and searched for the other one.
